.CN domain registration is open to any person or company, regardless the contry of residence. This characteristic is valid since 29th May 2012.
So far, more than 14 million .cn domains were registered, but due to a change in their registration policies in year 2010 caused that only Chinese companies could register .cn domains, prohibiting the registration by individuals and foreign companies. After this change, the number of .cn domains dropped to 11 million.

Residency requirements
For individuals outside of China: It is necessary to provide the following document:
- Copy of the domain holder's passport.
For companies and organizations outside of China: It is necessary to provide a copy of one of the following documents - Tax ID number or certificate of incorporation in the commercial register. - The person responsible for the organization must be indicated as the contact person for the domain, and a copy of his/her passport must be sent.
Registrants from China or Hong Kong cannot be accepted.

This extension doesn't have any technical requirements.
Registrations
.cn domain registrations are immediate.
After register a .cn domain the owner data must be validated, if the validation is not done the Registry will disable the domain until the owner is validated.
If a domain is disabled or cancelled because the owner is not validated the amount will not be refunded.
Transfers
To complete .CN domain transfer, you'll need your current registrar to provide you the domain's AuthCode or EPP-Key to verify the ownership of the domain.
Transfers can take between 5 and 7 days to complete. Some registrars provide manual transfers allowing transfers to be completed on the same day, contact your current registrar to find out if they offer this service.

Renewals
Renewing your .CN domain only takes a minute and can completed at any time.
Cancellations
It's possible to request a cancellation of your .CN domain, visit the support center to open a support ticket. Please note, cancelling a name does not provide a refund of any registration fees.
DNS modifications
DNS modification is immediate, please note they must propagate through the network, this process can take up to 6-12 hours to complete, until then the domain will still point to the previous DNS servers.
Domain owner change
Ownership changes are done manually and have additional costs, contact us via ticket in case you're interested in it.
Permitted characters
- .cn domains permit characters from 'a' to 'z', numbers from '0' to '9' and hyphens '-'.
- A hyphen '-' is not permitted in the first or last position of the domain name.
- Two consecutive hyphens are not permitted in the 3rd and 4th position.
